Yay for Dr. Christine Northrup, who appeared on the Dr. Oz show recently and told the viewing audience that “no women should be on synthetic hormones ever! Period!”. When Dr. Oz asked her why doctors, then, just don’t prescribe the natural hormones like progesterone, her response was right on.
Today I woke up to emails from clients, sending me the link to the article above , with the same old tired arguments and inaccuracies; and wanting me to blog my response FOR what we do, which is to create bio-identical hormone therapy customized for each woman who has a hormone imbalance issue. So here we go! LET THE GAMES begin with the list of inaccuracies:
I wrote a blog that was posted on December 15, 2010, entitled “Happy Holidays from The Cottage,” where I blogged about a 56 year old client, Cheri, who had come through our facility to “get tested, get treated and get better,” and really only got to the “get tested” piece because her doctor did not sign off on our recommendation for her natural hormone balance. Not only did he NOT sign off, he called us at our Piqua Medicine Shoppe to let us know AND told us she would be going “another route.” He prescribed for Cheri a synthetic drug called Estratest, that is conjugated estrogens and synthetic testosterone.
I got an email today from Janice: “I gave my saliva test results of my hormone levels to my OB/GYN and she advised me that I don’t need any hormone treatment or supplements. I’m no longer interested in this.” I wasn’t sure whether to laugh hysterically or do a kick boxing session! Either way, I feel badly for Janice! She obviously hasn’t read my blog of May 18 entitled “The Truth About BHRT” written by 3 ob/gyns.
You know how I love my emails! This is one I received recently from Jodi that did not make my day! She writes, “Lyn, I am sorry to report that I unfortunately have to discontinue my natural hormone therapy due to the financial aspect. I now have a high deductible insurance plan and have to pay out of pocket for all of my health needs. Thank you for everything and if my insurance plan should change in the future, I will meet with you again.” Please understand that I totally get it! Really I do!
I read a great article in The Wall Street Journal by Dr. Erika Schwartz, Dr. Kent Holtorf and Dr.David Brownstein- “The Truth About Hormone Therapy,” that speaks directly to what we at the Happy Hormone Cottage believe in and practice. Here is what they say:
So the gal I spoke about in my previous blog, who got her saliva test results and then went to her doctor (one who is NOT on our list of practitioners we work with) for treatment…..well let’s just say it gets better and better! (not!) This 54 year old gal, “Leslie,” came to us with symptoms of: hot flashes, heart palpitations, mood swings, irritability, vaginal dryness, weight gain, night sweats, depression, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and feeling cold all the time. The results of her saliva testing (hormones at the tissue level of cells) came back with the following results:
Okay, so I had the same exact phone conversation with 2 different women in the span of 30 minutes, AND I hear this same story again and again. I should just make bumper stickers that say,
“I’m ignorant! I’m not educated in this area of my health, So just do whatever you want to me and I’m good!!” Then when women who are hormonally imbalanced, so are suffering from hormone imbalance symptoms:
I recently received an email from one of our happy, hormonally balanced Happy Hormone Cottage clients. She is working on getting her friend, Laura, to come in and see us. She says that Laura has decided to” go in and see her ob gyn for her annual exam and have him do blood work to check hormones and thyroid. She wants to do this through her insurance.” My client wants to know the difference between what we do at the cottage and what Laura’s doctor might do. She says she wants to “try one last chance to save her. I can lead a horse to water…..”
