When we move from feeling a bit under the weather to constantly fatigued to completely worn out, it’s important to investigate the possible causes. One of the most common triggers of fatigue is adrenal fatigue. This condition can develop gradually over time, and as a result, recovery can take a long time!

Adrenal fatigue is categorized as a group of symptoms resulting from adrenal gland dysfunction. Cortisol is a stress hormone that is generated by the adrenal glands. When the body recognizes stress, the adrenal glands produce cortisol to assist the body in coping with it. Continual stress on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) can lead to adrenal fatigue by overloading the body and decreasing cortisol production.

Specially developed nutraceuticals from the Happy Hormone Cottage can assist individuals in overcoming vitamin shortages, preventing chronic disease, and gaining access to various additional health benefits.

Schedule an appointment with the team if you wish to overcome adrenal fatigue and get closer to a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. By evaluating your needs, we can recommend which nutraceutical products, such as Adrenal Boost, will help you overcome that “tired and wired” feeling.

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Our adrenal glands are two little glands that lie on top of our kidneys; they may be small, but they regulate virtually every hormone in our bodies and play a significant role in how we feel. One of their primary roles is to regulate the synthesis of cortisol and adrenaline, two stress hormones. Cortisol is involved in our responses to chronic, long-term stress, whereas adrenaline is involved in our responses to acute, short-term stress.

When we burn the candle at both ends or encounter prolonged stress, our adrenal glands can become so overworked that they cannot generate the required adrenal hormones and enter a state of burnout. If our adrenal glands burn out, we can feel tired and worn out. We may also have brain fog, aching muscles, and chronic inflammation, among other symptoms.

Once this occurs, it has a domino effect on blood sugar, mineral balance in the body, digestion, and thyroid hormone production, all of which are crucial for maintaining our energy levels so that we can operate correctly. As a result, we experience extreme exhaustion and struggle to manage day-to-day activities since our energy levels are so low.

What is the Cause of Adrenal Fatigue?

Long-term stress can also be brought on by the following:

  • A poor diet that strains the body, such as consuming too many processed carbohydrates and sweets, which can interfere with cortisol production
  • Chronic stress can cause intestinal damage and inflammation, exacerbating food allergies.
  • Heavy metals and pollution are prevalent in our surroundings. If we are under stress or our digestive system isn’t working properly, these substances may accumulate in our systems and cause difficulties.
  • Alcohol, coffee, and sweets in excess can overstimulate the adrenal glands.
  • If you’re a very sensitive person, you may experience great stress and anxiety, leading to burnout.

The HPA Axis

The hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands combine to form the HPA axis, which responds to stress while also controlling digestion and immunity. The hypothalamus reacts to stress, which stimulates the pituitary gland to release hormones that travel through the blood and instruct the adrenal glands to generate cortisol and other hormones such as DHEA.

Three Phases of Adrenal Fatigue

Since adrenal fatigue develops over time, it progresses through several phases until it reaches a point where it can become debilitating. There are three distinct phases of adrenal burnout.

STAGE 1: The Stress Response

You still have energy, but it is agitated and anxious. You produce excessive cortisol levels, which can induce sleeplessness and abdominal weight gain owing to insulin resistance and poor blood sugar regulation.

STAGE 2: Constant Alarm Mode

An increase in cortisol levels at 3 a.m. is a sign of this stage. Fluctuating cortisol levels cause your changing energy levels.

STAGE 3: Burnout

By the time the burnout stage is reached, you are always exhausted, and your adrenal glands have stopped releasing stress hormones to keep you going. Chronic inflammation makes you susceptible to autoimmune illnesses such as chronic fatigue and arthritis, among other conditions.

When you reach level 3, it gets harder because you have to be more careful about using supplements that are also stimulants, which may help for a little while but will cause you to crash again.
