Andropause: Understanding Male Menopause

Male menopause is the more common term for andropause. It describes age-related changes in male hormone levels. The same group of symptoms is also known as testosterone deficiency, androgen deficiency, and late-onset hypogonadism. According to the NIH, testosterone levels decline at a rate of 1% per year, with this having a more pronounced effect on men with existing testosterone deficiencies.

Something we hear all too often at the Happy Hormone Cottage and Integrated Hormone Center are our patients say “our men need help too”. Hormone therapy seems to have been separated from men, all the while hormone therapy offers men significant potential health and longevity benefits. HHC and IHC want to help men navigate hormone deficiency and dysfunction because it often solves many of the physical, psychological, and sexual symptoms and side effects they are experiencing.

What is Male Menopause?

Male menopause involves a drop in testosterone production in men who are aged 50 or older. It’s often associated with hypogonadism. Both conditions involve reduced testosterone levels and exhibit similar symptoms.

For men, testosterone is a hormone produced in your testes. It does more than fuel your sex drive. It also fuels changes during puberty, regulates your mental and physical energy, helps you build and retain muscle mass, controls your fight-or-flight response, along with other critical internal systems.

Male menopause differs from female menopause in several ways. For one thing, not all men experience it. Secondly, it doesn’t involve a complete shutdown of your reproductive organs. However, sexual complications may arise as a result of your lowered hormone levels.

Symptoms of Male Menopause

Male menopause can cause physical, sexual, and psychological problems. They typically worsen as you get older. They can include:
