Male menopause, more formally known as andropause, refers to an age-related decline in male hormone levels—most notably testosterone. Andropause is also called testosterone deficiency, androgen deficiency, and late-onset hypogonadism. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), testosterone levels decline at a rate of about 1% per year after the age of 30, with this having the most pronounced effect in men who already have low testosterone.
At Happy Hormone Cottage and Integrated Hormone Center, we often hear our patients say, “Our men need help too.” We couldn’t agree more! While hormone therapy is often discussed in relation to women’s health, men also experience physical, psychological, and sexual symptoms due to hormone imbalance. Addressing hormone deficiencies in men can help provide significant health and longevity benefits.
What is Male Menopause and Why Does Testosterone Matter?
Male menopause involves a drop in testosterone production, typically seen in men aged 50 or older. It’s often associated with hypogonadism—a condition that can affect males of any age—but both conditions involve reduced testosterone levels and exhibit similar symptoms.
For men, testosterone is a hormone primarily produced in the testes. Testosterone has many important functions in the male body—much more than fueling sex drive. It fuels changes during puberty, regulates mental and physical energy, helps build and retain muscle and bone mass, regulates mood and the body’s stress response, and even aids in red blood cell production.
Male menopause differs from female menopause in several ways. For one thing, not all men experience it. Secondly, it doesn’t involve a complete shutdown of reproductive organs, but rather a gradual decline. However, sexual complications may arise because of lowered hormone levels.
